Canton fire captains assist with Franklin ground search
By Mike BergerThe Norfolk County Technical Fire Rescue Team, which includes Canton fire captains Wendell Robery and Andy Morgan, searched for a possible body when an NStar crew uncovered a boot in the ground in Franklin on Friday, December 26, around 4:30 p.m.
Canton Fire Lt. Greg Woodbury said the NStar crew, while attempting to install a pole, stopped work after hitting a void, or empty space, in the ground. The crew found a boot and called in police and fire for further investigation.
The “tech crew,” consisting of 17 firefighters from area communities, responded to the scene and searched the ground using special camera equipment. Woodbury said the four-hour search turned up cans but nothing else.
Residents evacuated after Rubin Ct. stove fire
One residential building on Rubin Court was evacuated for over an hour on Monday, December 22, as 11 firefighters contained a stove fire inside one of the units. Firefighters limited the damage to the stove and cleared the building of smoke. The residential unit was habitable as workers were able to replace the damaged stove.
Fire Lt. Greg Woodbury said the cause of the fire was traced to plastic left on the heated stove. None of the residents were hurt and one firefighter sustained a minor injury.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 5:39 p.m. with the initial call coming into the station from a hallway smoke detector at 4:25 p.m. Woodbury said that when firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke in the hallway and evacuated all of the residents in the building. Woodbury said there are 10 to 12 separate residences within one Rubin Court building. He added that the fire should serve as a reminder not to leave anything flammable on a working stove.
