Indoor track teams top Milford for season’s 1st win
By Mike BergerBoth CHS indoor track teams rang in the new year with their first league win of the season last week, with the girls defeating Milford 61-38 and the boys edging the Hawks 51-47.
“I am very proud of these kids,” said first-year coach Anna Amico. “Everyone who competed has come to practice daily and given it their all day in and day out. Their hard work is evident, as many athletes posted personal bests in their event.”
On the boys’ side, Canton swept the 1,000 behind Timmy Gutowski (2:55.59), Andrew Moy (3:00.39) and Noah Healey (3:13.19). In the distance races, Liam Collins won the mile (4:39.87), and Mark Clancy won the two-mile with a personal-best time of 10:29.81. Oren Vishny also had a big day for the Bulldogs, winning the long jump (16’3”) and placing second in the 300m (personal-best 41.87s), while Phil Pennacchio finished first in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, two inches.
Other top placements for the boys included Albert Demers, 2nd, shot put, 31’1”; Evan Tondre, 2nd, 55m, 7.53; Jason Kaplan, 3rd, 55m, 7.54; and Brian Rota, 3rd, mile, 5:17.18.
The Bulldogs also picked up two big relay wins in the meet, led by the 4×200 unit of Kaplan, Wilson Dang, Vishny and Tondre and the 4×400 team of Healey, Collins, Moy and Gutowski.
In the girls’ victory over the Hawks, Selena Cho won the 55-meter dash (7.87), while Cat Song continued her domination in the two-mile, posting the fastest time in the league and a new personal best of 11:46.78.
The Bulldogs also swept the mile behind Olivia Stevens (6:26.57), Kerrin Sennett (6:27.16) and Margaret Polsgrove (personal-best 6:34.36), while Jen Dever and Sophie Argus finished one-two in the 1,000m with times of 3:51.94 and 3:56.27.
Other top placements for the Canton girls included Sam Koplik, 2nd, 55 hurdles, 10.09; Tanya Bastien, 2nd, 300m, personal-best 46.91; Lena Touzos, 3rd, 300m, 51.11; Maggie Dunn, 2nd, 600m, 2:01.85; and Tamara Auguste, 3rd, 55m, 8.20.
Canton was also well represented in the field events, led by Cho, who won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 2.75 inches. In the shot put, Amber Carrington and Rachel Dooley placed second and third with throws of 21’8” and 21’5” — both personal bests — and Bastien and Auguste placed second and third in the high jump, both with a height of four feet, five inches.
The girls also matched the boys with two relay victories, including a 4×200 win for Touzos, Auguste, Bastien and Cho and a 4×400 win for Julianna Howlett, Dever, Koplik and Song.
Both teams entered this week at 1-2 and were due to face Stoughton on Wednesday, January 7, at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
