Icemen find offense in wins vs. King Philip, Taunton

The CHS boys ice hockey team enjoyed a pair of “get-right” games last week as the Bulldogs exploded for 17 goals in blowout wins over King Philip and Taunton — snapping a two-game losing streak and pushing the team’s record back over .500 for the season.

With their first Hockomock League loss in more than two seasons (2-0 vs. Mansfield) still fresh in their minds, the Bulldogs took to home ice last Wednesday and took their frustrations out on the visiting KP Warriors, piling up six first-period goals en route to a 10-2 victory. The squad then went down to Aleixo Rink in Taunton three days later and tallied seven more scores in an eventual 7-1 win against the Tigers.

Junior forward Matt Lazaro, last year’s team scoring leader, had a monster week with five goals — including a hat trick against KP — while five others had multiple goals in the two-game stretch: John Femia, Shaun Kirby, Brian Hagan, Jerry Harding, and Tommy Kilduff.

Seamus Pecararo also notched a goal against KP — the first of his career — and Bobby Mullaney added one versus Taunton for his first of the season.

Beyond the scoring outburst, the Bulldogs got solid play last week from their blueliners, including senior Cian O’Mahoney, sophomore Jackson Maffeo, and senior captain Tyler Murphy. Junior goalie Justin Slocum also played well in both games, and seniors Sean Klimas and Tommy Chen both saw some action between the pipes as well.

Reflecting on the recent turnaround, head coach Brian Shuman noted how he shuffled his forward lines, which has led to some “really nice balance” over the last few games. He has also seen improvement on the defensive end both in games and in practice, although he stressed that the entire team still has plenty of room to grow. “They’re definitely trending in the right direction, which is a good thing to see,” he said.

The Bulldogs (4-3) were due to face a winless Stoughton team yesterday at Asiaf Arena, followed by back-to-back home games against Foxboro on Saturday and nonleague Newburyport on Martin Luther King Day, January 19.
