Canton High boys swimmers top Ashland for fourth win

By

The CHS boys swim team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 90-83 win over Ashland last week while the girls team (now 2-2) lost 103-77, with many of the races decided by a tenth of a second.

In the boys’ meet, head coach Lori Mooney noted there were many tight races and a number of outstanding individual performances. Sebastian Melendez placed first in both of his events — the 200 IM and the 100 fly — and Diego Ferstler and Owen Guerini placed first and second in the 50 freestyle with times of 24.67 and 24.98. Brian McCarthy had a strong showing in the 100 freestyle, placing second with a time of 1:03.72.

Scoring points for the team in the 500 freestyle were Guerini, second; Steven Hellmuth, fourth; and Caleb Casmir, fifth. “It is because these few step in to swim this long distance race that our team shows depth and continues to add points to the score,” noted Mooney.

The 200 IM relay also placed first behind Ferstler, Sean Mitchell, and Guerini with a time of 1:51.16.

Mooney also praised the efforts of newcomers Chris Milne, Colin Messinger, Jason Reese, Brian Regan, and Sorrel Paris. “Their presence in a variety of relays and individual events is helping the boys to be on the winning side,” she said.

In the girls’ meet, Amanda Walsh finished first in the 200 free, just touching out the Ashland competitor with a personal-best time of 2:14.07. Tiffany Ha posted a personal-best and finished a close second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:23.55. Ha also had a neck and neck race in the 100-yard breaststroke and was able to take the win with another best time of 1:13.50.

Brianna Mitchell had a strong showing in the 200 IM as well, placing third. Emilee Mercuri, Emily Beatty, and Ericka Feeney placed second, third, and fourth in the 100 fly. Kelsey Irons and Dasol Lee posted personal bests in the 100 free.

The girls’ 400 freestyle relays also finished second, third, and fourth. Finishing second was the relay of Emily Pham, Aoife O’Mahony, Dasol Lee, and Mitchell. Jen Arthur, Alexa Crossen, Siobhan Kelly, and Kelsey Irons finished third, and Hayley Rosenblatt, Nicole Conway, Izzy Bankowski, and Caroline McKenna finished fourth.

Both swim teams had an away meet scheduled for this Wednesday against Milford, followed by home meets at Blue Hills on Friday against Oliver Ames and next Monday against Sharon.
