Lady hoops making progress despite mounting losses
By Mike BergerSlowly but surely, CHS head girls basketball coach Jim Choquette is building something positive for the future. The team has one win to date but has competed well in several of their games as many of the younger players are getting more playing time and showing flashes of good play.
Last week, Canton lost to Foxboro 57-32, was edged by Norton 43-41, and fell to King Philip 55-42. They also lost to Sharon 63-53 on Friday, January 16.
The Bulldogs have built leads in many of the closer games, but one spurt by the opponent in the later stages of the game has proven to be the difference.
Senior captains Gabby Kenefick and Eileen Khoury continue to play steady and solid two-way basketball and are the team’s two leading scorers. Senior Alana Murphy is also playing well at center.
Canton is building a strong frontcourt led by sophomores Emma Murphy and Casey Shea and most recently freshman Hannah Jerrier, who is splitting her time between the junior varsity and varsity squads.
Juniors Meaghan Hunter, Shannon Foley and Rye Verille have each contributed solid two-way play, and freshman Jess Powers has provided scoring off the bench. Also contributing to the team’s progress are juniors Hannah Jankowski, Hayley Mulford, Maria Ruggieri, and Kelly Dever.
Due to this week’s snowstorm, the Bulldogs’ home game against Blackstone-Millville, originally scheduled for January 26, was postponed and will be made up at a later time. Tuesday’s game against Attleboro was also postponed and will be made up Thursday in Attleboro at 6:30 p.m. The lady Bulldogs will host Milford Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and Taunton on Tuesday, February 3, also at 6:30 p.m.
