News Notes: CFD reminds residents to clear gas vents
By Mike BergerFor the second week in a row, the Fire Department responded to several carbon monoxide alarms resulting from clogged gas vents. According to Fire Lt. Greg Woodbury, several of the 16 calls received in Monday’s snowstorm were for blocked gas vents. Firefighters also responded several times to a duplex on Indian Woods Way, where a blocked vent led to a buildup of the gas and activated the CO detector. Woodbury and last week Fire Chief Charlie Doody called attention to the importance of keeping the outside furnace vents clear of snow.
Snowstorm changes trash/recycling schedule
Due to the recent snowstorms, trash pickup in Canton is again delayed for two days this week. Tuesday’s regular pickup was on Thursday; Wednesday’s pickup will be on Friday, February 6; and Thursday and Friday’s pickup will occur on Saturday, February 7.
Snow contractor vehicles hit gas pipes
In two separate incidents on Wednesday, January 28, private contractors clearing snow on commercial properties at 95 Shawmut Road and 956 Turnpike Street hit gas pipes. In both cases, firefighters shut off the gas until the gas company arrived and inspected the buildings.
Gas ‘burping’ leads to several Fire Dept. calls
Fire Lt. Greg Woodbury reported several instances in the last week of increased gas line pressure by Columbia Gas — what Woodbury referred to as “burping the system” — resulting in several brief incidents where the odor of gas could be detected. Several calls came in to the station from all over town. Woodbury said it is better for a resident to call the station anytime they smell an unusual odor of gas.
