CHS girls basketball team storms past Black Knights
By Mike BergerWinning every quarter and with almost every player scoring, the CHS girls basketball team stormed past the Stoughton Black Knights 75-39 for its second win of the season in the opening game of the SHS-CHS boys and girls doubleheader at Stoughton High Friday night.
The win was Canton’s first against a Hockomock League opponent in 29 games. The 75 points was the Bulldogs’ highest point total of the year, and the 39 points allowed was the third lowest total of the season.
The Bulldogs led 11-6 after the first quarter, 31-18 at the half, and 46-29 at the end of the third. Head coach Jim Choquette emptied the bench in the fourth quarter and the offense responded with a 29-point outburst.
The scoring was balanced with four players in double figures, led by senior captain Gabby Kenefick with 14 points. Emma Murphy had 13 points, freshman Jess Powers had 12, and Meaghan Hunter had 11. Other scorers included Shannon Foley (7), Hayley Mulford (5), Hannah Jerrier (4), Casey Shea (3), Eileen Khoury (3), Rye Verille (2), and Alana Murphy (1). Khoury, Foley, and Murphy were outstanding on the boards and on defense. In fact, Choquette praised the play of the entire team.
“I think our defense was the biggest factor in the game as our defense turned into offense,” he said. “I was also pleased with our rebounding. I give all the credit to the girls. It took almost two years to get to this point. Now the girls can see the results of their hard work.”
The Bulldogs were due to wrap up the season this week with four games in four days: Tuesday at Oliver Ames, Wednesday versus Blackstone-Millville, Thursday versus Taunton in a special fundraiser night for breast cancer awareness (Play4K – Kay Yow Cancer Fund), and Friday versus Sharon on Senior Night.
