Boys swimmers finish strong at D2 state meet
By Mike BergerA memorable CHS swimming season came to its conclusion last weekend with a strong showing by some of the boys swimmers at the Division 2 state meet held at MIT.
The event had originally been scheduled for the previous weekend but was postponed due to inclement weather. The girls state meet did go on as scheduled and featured performances by Canton’s Tiffany Ha, Amanda Walsh, Julia Guerini, Kim Frazier, and Emilee Mercuri.
At the boys meet on February 20, rising star Sebastian Melendez capped off his historic debut season with another stellar performance, placing second overall in the 500 freestyle (4:44.93) and third in the 200 free (1:44.01) against the very best swimmers in the state.
“It was another great night for him,” head coach Lori Mooney said of Melendez, who won both events at the sectional meet.
Mooney said his two first-place finishes at sectionals “were the first time anyone has done that in sectional history as well as in Canton history.” “Congratulations to him,” she added. “They were very exciting races to watch.”
Also competing at the boys state meet was Canton’s Sean Mitchell, who improved his time in the 50-yard freestyle by half a second to 23.6 seconds. In addition, the Bulldogs sent two relay teams to the meet: the 200 IM team of Diego Ferstler, Mitchell, Melendez, and Owen Guerini, who came in 18th out of 26 teams with their best time of 1:50.20, and the 400 freestyle team of Ferstler, Dan Nadeau, Guerini, and Melendez, who finished 15th and beat their seed time by three seconds to finish at 3:35.46.
Reflecting on their performances, Mooney said it was great to see the boys finish strong in what was an outstanding season for both squads. “After training hard all season you want to come into these meets and post your top times, and both girls and boys did just that. Heading to these venues is a tremendous way to wrap up an already successful season.”
