Bulldog wrestler DiCalogero takes 4th at All-States
By Jay TurnerComing off back to back runner-up finishes at the Division 3 central and MIAA state wrestling tournaments, CHS senior captain Rob DiCalogero continued his stellar final season with a fourth-place finish at last weekend’s prestigious All-State event, featuring the top wrestlers from across Massachusetts regardless of division.
DiCalogero, wrestling at 145 pounds, was Canton’s lone representative at the two-day event, which was held February 27 and 28 at Salem High School. He placed ahead of 17 other wrestlers in his weight class and was the top performing Division 3 wrestler in the 21-person bracket.
Overall, DiCalogero won three of his five matches, defeating Nick Gould of North Attleboro (pin), Marlen Lamas of Framingham (11-7), and Reese Millington of Haverhill by forfeit. His two losses came against the eventual champion, Nashoba’s Ronan Ball (pin), and the third-place finisher, Catholic Memorial’s Pat Ferzoco (major decision).
After the tournament, head coach Brian Caffelle raved about DiCalogero’s performance, calling it the “best tournament of his career.”
“Rob wrestled extremely well,” said Caffelle. “He ended up making the semifinals in a loaded weight class … He wrestled relentlessly and had matches where he was losing early on, but came back and won them.”
By virtue of placing in the top six, DiCalogero earned a spot in the New England Championships, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7, at North Andover High School.
