CHS softball team still looking for first win
By Mike BergerThe CHS softball team is still winless after six games as the lady Bulldogs ran into pitching trouble last week, losing an April 20 doubleheader to Boston Latin 12-9 and 21-9 followed by a loss to rival Stoughton 8-1.
Against Boston Latin, regular starter Sarah Reissfelder pitched the first game but could not continue due to arm fatigue. Hannah Links volunteered to pitch the second game and lasted the entire game. Reissfelder was able to return the next day against Stoughton, but the Canton bats were silent for most of the game.
The offense did come alive against Boston Latin, however, and the Bulldogs went into the sixth tied at 9-9 in the opening game before Boston Latin added three runs. Canton amassed 18 hits in the game, led by Gabby Mathews, Kaitlin McCarthy and Links, who each had three hits and two RBIs. Colleen Phelan also hit a double.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Rachel Dooley, Phelan, Matthews, and McCarthy each had several hits for the Bulldogs.
Head coach Tracy Andrews said the team had several practices this week to work on aggressive hitting and “urgency” in the early stages of the game. After six games, Matthews and McCarthy lead the team in hits and batting average.
Canton will now begin a stretch of five home games and will look to create some winning momentum. This week, the team was due to host Sharon on Monday, Attleboro on Wednesday, and Franklin on Friday, followed by home games next week against Mansfield and Taunton. All home games begin at 3:30 except the Taunton game, which will start at 4 p.m.
