Editorial: Time is now to act on Plymouth Rubber

By

This coming Monday, May 11, the owners of the Plymouth Rubber property will go before the town’s voters and state their case for redevelopment of the historic 35-acre factory site. Standing behind them in support of this effort will be a chorus of Canton town officials and community stakeholders, and we, the editors of the Canton Citizen, strongly believe that they are making the correct call.

Having closely followed this effort over the past eight years, the Citizen now sees a project that has been carefully designed and thoroughly vetted, analyzed and dissected, worked and then re-worked some more. The proposal that is now before the town is reasonable in size and scope, fair to both the developer and the town, and loaded with community benefits — not to mention long overdue.

In particular, the Citizen sees great promise and potential with the proposed Paul Revere Heritage Site, which will offer significant recreational and cultural benefits while preserving the legacy of one of Canton’s most famed and influential citizens. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, we believe that the developer’s plan for environmental cleanup and remediation, although not perfect, is nonetheless substantial and so much greater than the present alternative.

The Citizen strongly believes that the time to act is now. We confidently cast our “vote” in support of redevelopment and encourage our fellow citizens to do the same.
