Girls lax still hopeful despite 2 more close L’s
By Jay TurnerThe heartbreak continued for the CHS girls lacrosse team last week as the Bulldogs endured two more close losses, falling to Apponequet and Oliver Ames by a combined three goals.
The team is now 2-7 on the season, with six of their nine games having been decided by three goals or less.
“Our games have almost all been tight, so we can’t get too discouraged,” said head coach Bethany Compagna. “We are in these games neck and neck.”
In Monday’s game against familiar nonleague foe Apponequet Regional, the Bulldogs fell behind early before rallying in the second half, closing to within two after back-to-back goals by Mary McNeil. The senior captain finished with four goals in the loss, and junior Casey Bradley had a stellar game with two goals and two assists. Other offensive contributors included Mary Nee (1g, 1a), Emily Rizzitano (1g), Christine Ward (2a), and Mary Kent (1a).
Two days later at Oliver Ames, the Bulldogs fell behind by two goals but battled back and even took the lead at one point before falling just short in the end, 10-9.
“With Oliver Ames it’s usually a battle, and it didn’t disappoint,” said Compagna. “We were able to tie it and went ahead in the second half, but it just slipped away.”
McNeil, Nee and Ward each finished with three goals while Caitlin Hutchinson, Lauren Peplau, Lindsey Nolte, and Kelsey Trerice all had one assist.
At this point, the Bulldogs will need to win most of their remaining games in order to salvage their record and sneak into the playoffs. And the team should get a boost this week with the return of seniors Erin Proctor and Danielle Arthur, who recently rejoined the squad after a three-week German exchange trip.
The Canton girls were due to travel to Apponequet on Monday for a rematch of last week’s game, followed by an away match Wednesday at Milford. The team will then play their next four at home, including games next week against Sharon, Attleboro, and Foxboro.
