News notes: Police respond to disturbance at GMS
By Mike BergerCanton police responded to a disturbance at the Galvin Middle School on Monday, May 11, around 1 p.m. A 14-year-old male student will be summoned to face charges of carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds, malicious destruction of property over $250, and disorderly conduct. Police said a search of his knapsack turned up an air pellet gun, but it was not shown to other students.
Dry conditions lead to mulch fires
The Fire Department is urging the public to properly dispose of cigarette butts as the recent dry conditions are prime for mulch fires. Firefighters were called to extinguish three such fires in the past week, including ones on Pleasant Street and Randolph Street on May 8, and another near Crowell’s Market on May 9. Firefighters also responded to a brush fire behind Meetinghouse Lane on May 5. Fire Captain Tad Johnston said that even with the recent showers, the dry conditions still exist.
