Three men in custody after vehicle shooting incident
By Mike BergerThree men remain in court custody and face a dangerousness hearing this week for charges of armed assault with the intent to murder and multiple firearms charges following a shooting of a vehicle early Sunday morning, May 17, on Route 138 and Washington Street near Adrienne Drive. No one was injured in the shooting, which occurred around 4:30 a.m.
Canton police received a 911 call from the victim saying he had been traveling on Route 128 North and when he exited onto Route 138 South, a vehicle pulled alongside his and fired several shots. Additional shots were fired as the vehicles traveled on Washington Street. Berkowitz said the victim was fired upon at least five times by a nine-millimeter gun.
The suspects’ vehicle was stopped later that morning on Route 106 in Mansfield following an area-wide search, and Mansfield police arrested all three men: Yancey Williams, 27, of Boston, Louis Whitehead, 35, of Boston, and Arthur Williams, 37 of Randolph. All three were charged with assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. In Whitehead’s case, police also charged him with a third offense for carrying a firearm without a license.
As of Monday night, May 18, Police Chief Ken Berkowitz said police still had not determined a motive for the shooting. The victim denied knowing the suspects and also denied having any prior contact with the vehicle in traffic. Berkowitz said the three suspects were being held without bail and added that all three men had prior criminal records.
