Girls tennis eyes playoff berth after 3 straight W’s
By Jay TurnerThe Canton High girls tennis team continued its impressive second-half surge last week with three straight team wins over division foes Oliver Ames (4-1), Milford (3-2), and Stoughton (4-1).
With the three victories, the Bulldogs improved to 6-7 overall with three matches remaining heading into this week. The girls would need to win two of those contests in order to qualify for the south sectional team tournament; however, getting there would require a major upset as the team still faces both Sharon and Foxboro — two of the top girls tennis teams in the state.
Either way, head coach Bill Kates said the girls deserve a lot of credit for turning around their season after an 0-3 start. Two of those early losses came against Oliver Ames and Milford, and last week the Bulldogs got the better of both teams, led by first singles player Emma Sokolovsky, who dominated both of her opponents in straight sets.
Sokolovsky also defeated her Stoughton opponent (6-2, 6-2) and improved to 5-7 overall after the three-match sweep. Meanwhile, third singles player Skyler Jabbour (6-7) picked up three more wins of her own last week, including a three-set battle against her Milford opponent that sealed the victory for Canton.
At second singles, Carly Scanlon (5-8) fell to her OA opponent, but bounced back to take the next two versus Milford and Stoughton, winning both matches in straight sets.
Other multiple winners last week included junior doubles player Tiffany Ha and senior captain Christina Guccione. Ha won at first doubles against OA alongside classmate Sarah MacQuarrie and then teamed with Guccione to take down their Stoughton opponent 6-4, 6-0. Guccione also earned a win against OA, teaming with fellow captain Asia Smith to win in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
The Bulldogs were due to visit Sharon on Monday in their lone match of the week. The team will then head to King Philip Regional next Wednesday before closing out the regular season next Friday at home versus Foxboro.
