CHS softball team tops Sharon for season’s 1st win
By Mike BergerAll the hard work and extra practice put in by the CHS softball team paid off as the lady Bulldogs beat Sharon 7-4 last week, coming from behind in the seventh inning on the road to pull off their first win of the season.
A grand slam by junior starting pitcher Sarah Reissfelder in the seventh inning was the big hit the Bulldogs needed as Canton won its first game in 16 attempts.
“I am very proud of this team,” said head coach Tracy Andrews. “They deserve this win. Without me having to say it, the players said before the game the goal was to score two runs per inning.”
Reissfelder was the hero of the day with her grand slam and a complete game outing with seven strikeouts. The Bulldogs as a team also had a good offensively, collecting 15 hits. Gabby Mathews had three singles, Colleen Phelan had two singles and a double, Sammy Devane had a double and a single, and Hannah Link had two singles.
Andrews said she liked the hitters’ confidence in this game, noting, “They had good at-bats and they were confident going up there at the plate.”
The Sharon game was the team’s only action last week, and Andrews used the time for extra practice and team bonding.
The Bulldogs had a busy final week with four games in four days this week, starting with an away game Wednesday at King Philip. The team will then host Foxboro on Friday, May 29, at 3:30 p.m. and will wrap up the regular season Saturday with a doubleheader against Wayland.
