CHS alums among New England’s finest coaches
By Canton CitizenAlthough they fell short of their ultimate goal, the Franklin Pierce University baseball team enjoyed another record-breaking season under legendary coach and Canton native Jayson King. Playing in their 11th straight NCAA Division II championship tournament, the top-seeded Ravens fell at home to Wilmington 5-3 in the East Regional semifinals on May 17. Despite the loss, King’s squad still finished No. 4 in the nation with a spectacular 48-4 record, bringing his record to 606-282-3 after 17 seasons as head coach. Prior to landing at Franklin Pierce, the Canton High alum coached at UMass Boston, where he set a school record for wins in just his second season at the helm. He is a six-time ABCA/Rawlings Region Coach of the Year and a seven-time NEIBA Division II Coach of the Year. King currently resides in Westminster with his wife, Missy, his daughter, Catherine, and son, Justin.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, another New England coaching legend with Canton roots, Mike Ivanoski, wrapped up a very successful 20-year run as head football coach at Hanover High School in New Hampshire. A 1986 graduate of CHS and a former Bulldog linebacker, Ivanoski was one of the youngest coaches in NH history to win 100 games and led his squad to five NHIAA championship games, including three state titles in a four-year span. He was also a three-time NH Coach of the Year recipient and was selected as one of the top 10 coaches in New England by USA Today in 2013.
