At their annual meeting, the Canton Historical Society awarded retiring selectwoman Avril Elkort a lifetime membership in the society in appreciation for her 27 years (nine terms) serving the town of Canton. Also at the meeting, the society approved a motion to name the textile room “The Wally and Marie Gibbs Textile Room.” They have been instrumental in organizing all of the society’s textile collections as well as influential in the current growth and strength of the society.
The Canton Historical Society’s new president is Paul Mitcheroney.
In a recent special election, voters approved a $4.1-million debt-exclusion to add eight classrooms to the Hansen Elementary School. Only 1,184 residents turned out at the polls, which is less than 7 percent of the registered voters. The yes votes were 898 and the no votes were 296. It will cost the average homeowner another $26 per year over the next 20 years. Construction on this project will begin in the fall and is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2016-2017 school year.
Talking about taxes, Massachusetts retailers are calling for a tax-free weekend on August 15-16. The state’s sales tax of 6.25 percent on items costing $2,500 or less will be suspended. Beacon Hill lawmakers have approved sales tax holidays during 10 of the last 11 years.
The Phantom Gourmet recently listed eight of the top seafood restaurants in New England. The Dry Dock Café, located at 7 Dry Dock Avenue in Boston, was among the Phantom’s Great 8. The café is owned by Canton resident Kathy Spiropoulos.
The fourth annual Canton Veterans Golf Outing will be held on Monday, August 17, at the Wampatuck Country Club. The Canton Veterans Golf Committee is looking for tee sponsors at $100. A veteran’s name, rank, branch of service, and years served will be placed on a sign for all to see.
