CAASA to host presentation on concussions and substance abuse
By Canton CitizenOn Wednesday, September 16, the Canton Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CAASA) will host a program for coaches and parents entitled “Concussion and Substance Abuse for the Student-Athlete” from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Canton High School. The presenter, Dr. Dan Muse of Canton, will discuss the role of coaches in managing concussions and substance abuse prevention.
An experienced emergency medicine physician and youth sports coach, Dr. Muse has spoken to numerous schools about substance abuse and concussions. He also has extensive experience working with police departments and has served as the medical director for nasal narcan for over 30 departments in Norfolk, Plymouth, and Middlesex counties. Additionally, Dr. Muse is the medical director of the SportsSmart sports medicine program at Signature Healthcare and manages concussions through the SportsSmart program.
CAASA was established in 2013 to address youth substance in four focus areas: prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery. Coalition meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at the Canton Parks and Recreation offices, located at 92 Pleasant Street. The upcoming presentation is one of many steps the CAASA is taking to address the growing epidemic of opioid abuse in the town of Canton, and all local youth sports directors, along with their coaches, are strongly encouraged to attend.
