The CHS golf team entered the state tournament on a high note after closing out the regular season with a home win over Stoughton last week 159-179 at Blue Hill Country Club. Canton finished the season at 11-3 overall, good for second place in the Davenport Division behind undefeated Oliver Ames.

In addition to the Stoughton match, Canton also competed in the Hockomock League Championship meet, held October 15 at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth. Three golfers from each of the 12 league teams played 18 holes on the par-71 course.

Canton placed sixth on the day with a team score of 251. Jack Goyetch shot an 81 and finished tied for 11th overall, while Danny Powers and senior captain Jim Jenkins both shot an 85. “Jack and Danny are both sophomores and played really well among the best golfers in the league,” noted head coach Mike Barucci. “This experience they gained will help them in the next few years. It is rare that a sophomore plays in this event, especially representing the nos. 1 and 2 spots for a team.”

Goyetch, Powers, and Jenkins were also among the top six golfers set to represent Canton in the Division 2 south qualifier, scheduled for Monday, October 19, at Easton Country Club. This is the sixth year the Bulldogs have qualified as a team. The other three golfers chosen to compete were Jackson Maffeo, Griffin Jerrier, and Steve Gorham.

“If we get six great scores, we have a chance to advance to the state finals,” Barucci said. “I am looking forward to seeing how our best golfers compete against some of the other best golfers in the state.”

In the Stoughton win, senior captain Gorham bounced back from some higher scores to earn co-medalist with a team-best score of 39. Junior Shaun Kirby also shot a 39 season and has shown the potential to be a big contributor in his senior year. Other top scorers for Canton included Jenkins (40) and seniors Griffin Jerrier (41) and Joe Peccia (41).
