CHS boys hoop team still optimistic despite 0-2 start
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys basketball team is looking for better results after suffering back-to-back blowout losses to Franklin and Foxboro last week. The Bulldogs lost to the Panthers 61-24 on the road on December 15 and then fell to the Warriors at home 60-17 two days later.
“It’s a long season,” said head coach Ryan Gordy. “You can’t get too high during the good moments and you can’t get too low during the tough moments. We start the season with the top three teams in the league this year in Franklin, Foxboro, and Mansfield. All three of those teams are positioned to make deep tournament runs. Once we get through that portion of the schedule, things will begin to improve.”
Gordy acknowledged that the team is relatively inexperienced but is growing day by day. “Our practices have been extremely competitive thus far, and we are improving every day,” he said.
Defense is the team’s strong suit and offensively the team is working on ball security, said Gordy.
He said this year’s slow start reminds him of the 2012-2013 season, when the Bulldogs lost to Taunton 86-41. “We finished that season qualifying for the state tournament and advancing in the first round over a very talented Abington team on their home court,” said Gordy. “That team stayed together and grew all season, ending with the first state tournament win Canton basketball had in over a decade. I have all the confidence in the world that this year’s team will grow in the same fashion that the 12-13 team did.”
The team is led by senior captains Ben O’Neill, Woanyen Mahn and Rishi Jambunathan and senior Michael Harris. Other players are juniors Brian Albert, Troy Appleberry, Danny Hartnett and Eric Olshaker; sophomores Tony Harris, Austin Maffie and Jake Verille; and freshman Devin Foster.
Canton was due to face Mansfield at home on December 21 with its next game slated for Monday, December 28, at Avon beginning at 10 a.m.
