CHS boys hoop crushes Avon for season’s 1st win
By Mike BergerThe Canton High boys basketball team had its highest offensive output in two years as the Bulldogs beat Avon 74-33 last week for their first win of the season.
Senior forward-center Griffin Jerrier was dominant in this game as he recorded his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Tony Harris also had a big game, scoring 14 points with two three pointers, while sophomore Austin Maffie and junior Eric Olshaker added eight points apiece. Senior guard Ben O’Neill also had a nice game as he dished out six assists and had four steals.
Defensively, the Bulldogs were superb, causing 28 Avon turnovers and igniting the offense, which scored nine three-point shots.
“We are far from a finished product, but we continue taking steps in the right direction,” said head coach Ryan Gordy after the win. “We are honoring the process of one day at a time as we continue climbing the ladder to reach our full potential this season.”
During practice last week, Gordy invited back former CHS alumni to speak to the team about making progress during the season. Recent alumni players who came to practice included former captain Andrew Mansfield, three-point record holder Matt Kelley, former 1,000-point scorer Sam Larson, and former Bulldogs Scott Olshaker and James Bourikas.
“The message for the program was about competition and mindset in order to get better individually and as a team,” said Gordy.
The Bulldogs returned to action on Monday with a home game against Oliver Ames and will next play Stoughton on the road on Friday, January 8, starting at 6:30 p.m.
