News Notes: CFD warns of unsafe ice conditions
By Mike BergerDespite the recent stretch of cold weather, Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody said none of the ice on any pond is safe to walk on. Last Wednesday while returning from a call, the Engine 1 crew spotted a group of children playing on Dog Patch Pond, which is located at the intersection of Washington and Pecunit streets near the Hansen School. The firefighters stopped and warned the children about the unsafe conditions.
Cold snap causes water pipe breaks
Last week’s cold weather led to a flurry of calls to the Fire Department concerning water pipe breaks, particularly on January 5 and 6. On Tuesday, firefighters responded to a water pipe break in a condominium unit on Indian Woods Way. The following day, they responded to two calls for sprinkler breaks — one in the basement area at Reebok and the other in a vacant building at the former Emerson & Cuming building on Washington Street.
On January 8, firefighters responded to another report of broken water pipes at a home on Old Randolph Street. Firefighters shut off the water and cut the power to the oil burner. No one was home at the time of the incident.
CFD still offering free CO installations
The Canton Fire Department still has a number of free carbon monoxide detectors that are available to residential homeowners. The CFD will install the detectors at no cost as long as the existing detectors are not hard-wired. Interested residents should call the Council on Aging at 781-828-1323 or Fire Lt. Greg Woodbury at 781-575-6654 ext. 114.
