Community leaders to ‘do time’ at MDA Lock-Up

Business and community leaders from the Canton area will “do a little time and a lot of good” to help save and improve the lives of people fighting muscular dystrophy and related life-threatening diseases at the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Lock-Up fundraising event.

Jill Rossetti, principal of Blue Hills Regional Technical School, was one of the first to volunteer and is working to raise bail for MDA. Representatives from Alfieri Proctor Associates, Canton Co-operative Bank, the Canton Planning Board, Canton Veterans Services, CK Environmental, Law Offices of David Flashenburg, Harrison Specialty Co., Ideal Instrument Co., Jags Automobile Services, Jiffy Lube, Living the Dream Auto Care, Needham Electric Supply, Chubby Chickpea, Thompson & Lichtner Inc., and YD Autobody have all volunteered to “go behind bars” as part of MDA’s Lock-Up event on March 2 at Napper Tandy’s in Norwood.

During the event, the “jailbirds” will be locked up for one hour as they attempt to raise “bail” by encouraging friends, family, and co-workers to make a contribution to directly benefit MDA families in the Canton area. To support a jailbird with a donation, visit mdalockup.org/norwood2016.

“MDA’s Lock-Up theme helps illustrate what a serious problem neuromuscular disease is and why we need to do something about it now,” said Executive Director Jane Young. “Jailbirds only lose their freedom for one hour, but for children and adults fighting muscle disease, the loss of mobility and the challenges that result when muscles stop working are progressive and permanent. It is thanks to the support from our Lock-Up participants and generosity from community members that we will raise critical funds and awareness to help families who live with these debilitating effects live stronger, longer lives.”

Canton author and owner of the renowned Chubby Chickpea Avi Shemtov is among those scheduled to appear before the Honorable MDA Judge in March. Tony Andreotti, Canton’s veterans agent, is looking forward to his impending arrest and is working with his assistant to raise bail. “She has some good ideas to keep me locked up forever,” joked Andreotti.

Funds raised through Lock-Up donations help MDA create a world free from the harmful effects of muscle diseases that often take away people’s ability to walk, move, talk, smile, and even breathe.

Dollars raised also help support MDA’s life-enhancing programs such as state-of-the-art support groups and clinics, including MDA Clinics at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Tufts Medical Center Hospital, Children’s Hospital Boston, Leahy Clinic, Mass. General Hospital, Baystate Medical Center, and UMass Memorial Medical Center. They also make MDA summer camp possible so kids with muscle disease can enjoy “the best week of the year” at Agassiz Village Summer Camp in Poland, Maine, and nearly 80 other locations nationwide.
