Police probe juvenile offenses at vacant house
By Mike BergerPolice were called to investigate various juvenile offenses allegedly committed on New Year’s Eve in a vacant home on Village Gate Road. A total of five juveniles, ranging in age from 14-16, will be summoned to court to face charges. Police said the alleged perpetrators include both males and females and a mix of Canton residents and out of town residents.
One 14 year old faces charges of assault and battery, intimidating a witness, breaking into a building in the nighttime, possession of liquor under 21, and failing to report certain crimes. Four others face charges of breaking and entering in the nighttime, possession of liquor under 21, and failing to report certain crimes.
Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said because the case involves juveniles, she was limited in what she could release to the public but said that all of the department’s school resource officers worked on the case.
Subzero temps lead to rash of broken pipes
The Canton Fire Department responded to 12 instances of broken water pipes and sprinkler systems in various homes and businesses earlier this week as a result of the recent cold spell. One such broken sprinkler pipe occurred at the Shaw’s Supermarket front entrance on Monday.
In other news, the Fire Department transported one person to Good Samaritan Hospital for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash on Monday, February 8, around 9:15 p.m. The driver struck a telephone pole at the intersection of York Street and Indian Lane.
Firefighters also responded to a report of smoke caused by an electrical short at a home on Mohawk Road on Saturday, February 13, around 2 p.m.
