BOS to seek truck exclusion on Chapman, Dedham St.
By Mike BergerSelectmen voted unanimously Tuesday night to forward a report to the state Department of Transportation seeking a truck exclusion on Dedham and Chapman streets once the new I-95 off ramp on Dedham Street is built.
The exclusion requires the approval of MassDOT followed by a public hearing by selectmen. Exemptions can be granted to trucks that have no other access point and to delivery trucks delivering items such as furniture and appliances.
A traffic study conducted by the town’s traffic consultant, McMahon Associates, concluded that truck exclusions are possible with the state building an off-ramp connecting I-95 North to Shawmut Road beginning this spring.
Selectman Bob Burr said if MassDOT approves the request, he would like the board to include in its vote a condition that selectmen reexamine the effects of the truck ban throughout the town a year after it is implemented, or perhaps sooner if the need arises.
Selectman Victor Del Vecchio said the issue has been on the board’s agenda for the last few years and arose originally with concerns over traffic impacts from the University Station project in Westwood.
“The public is aware of this,” Del Vecchio said. “We have heard from Dedham and Chapman Street residents who have requested this. It doesn’t appear to impact other streets. I strongly support it and think it is long overdue.”
An example of a company needing an exemption is the Arthur Lamb Rigging Co. on Jackson Street. According to owner Greg Lamb, because of the traffic configuration on Jackson Street, some of the truck deliveries to his plant would still have to come through Chapman Street …
