Technology continues every day to improve our lives — and make them more complicated. New services driven by technology give consumers more choices and the ability to choose based on their personal preferences. The financial services industry is no different.

‘Robo-advisors’ give consumers the opportunity to receive investment and financial planning advice in an inexpensive and turnkey manner. While new, these services cater to individuals who are confident in making their own decisions, hold themselves relentlessly accountable, and have the time to spend both learning about and executing strategies that fit their needs. It’s great that such a service exists to cater to this portion of our population. However, this population is quite small and is dwarfed by those who want to shake someone’s hand before turning over their life savings.

For many, there is no replacing a personal financial advisor. Someone who knows the names of your children and the details of your goals, not just your financial stats. Choosing a personal financial advisor is never about their college degree or the letters attached to their name; it’s about working with someone you can trust with your financial life. Someone who will look you in the eye and speak to you when the stock market is down or congratulate you on your retirement day or when your child graduates from college.

If you are looking for a personal financial advisor, don’t drive into Boston and take the elevator to the 30th floor or get in line to wait for the next advisor in the service center. Stay in Canton and speak with an advisor you may see out jogging, at the grocery store, or at town meeting. Think local and plan your future with someone who is as much a part of the community as you are.
