Canton backs Trump, Clinton in state primary election
By Jay TurnerAs was the case across the rest of the Bay State on Tuesday, Donald Trump trounced the field of GOP candidates and Hillary Clinton earned a solid victory on the Democratic side in an action-packed primary day that saw more than half of all Canton voters turn out at the polls.
Trump, the billionaire reality television star who took seven of 11 states on “Super Tuesday,” received a whopping 1,388 votes in Canton — more than double the total of the next two highest vote getters: Marco Rubio (560) and John Kasich (553). Texas Senator Ted Cruz was fourth with 237 votes, while Ben Carson finished a distant fifth with 59 votes.
In the Democratic primary, Clinton was the big winner as she carried five of six precincts and finished with more than 54 percent of the vote (2,389). Sanders, who won four states on Tuesday and proved to be the favorite of precinct 4 in Canton, finished with 1,958 votes.
Approximately 7,200 Canton residents cast votes in the primary, which equates to a turnout of just over 50 percent. Across the commonwealth, voters turned out in droves and set a new record, surpassing the previous turnout record of 1.8 million set in 2008.
