Canton’s Lewis takes 8th at All-State wrestling meet
By Jay TurnerCHS senior wrestler Brendan Lewis capped off a stellar four-year career with an eighth-place finish at the MIAA All-State meet held last weekend at Reading High School.
One of this year’s breakout stars in the 126-pound class, Lewis once again proved he belonged against the very best wrestlers in the state, finishing 2-3 at the two-day tournament with a couple of close losses.
Both of his victories came by pinfall — one at the 5:40 mark against Whitman-Hanson’s Mike McDonough and the other at 3:14 against Central Catholic’s Tom Pagliarulo. His toughest competitor proved to be Bryce Finnegan of Algonquin, who beat him 9-2 in the opening round and again in the seventh-place match by a final score of 5-2.
Lewis also lost a close bout with Sam Goldberg — the same opponent he defeated a few weeks ago to claim the Division 3 central sectional title. Lewis had been unbeaten in his career against the Holliston wrestler going into the match; however, this time Goldberg got the better of the matchup (11-9) and went on to finish fifth at the tournament.
The overall winner at 126 lbs. was another familiar opponent, Foxboro’s Matt Kelley, who had defeated Lewis a week earlier in the Division 3 state finals. One of the best pound-for-pound wrestlers in all of New England, Kelley did not give up a single point in four matches en route to his second consecutive All-State title. He was similarly perfect at the state meet until Lewis gave him a run for his money in the finals in an eventual 7-3 decision.
Overall, Lewis finished 8-4 with four pins across three postseason tournaments. He wrestled in two finals matches, captured his first sectional championship, and became the first in program history to receive an Outstanding Wrestler Award in an MIAA postseason tournament.
