New year-round collection facility to open Friday

Canton’s revamped yard waste and household bulk center opens tomorrow, April 1, and will remain open year round with winter hours to be determined, according to DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta.

Located at the former Pine Street landfill, the facility will not only accept yard waste, but residents will now be allowed to bring bulk furniture items and mattresses and excess trash. The hours for the facility are Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding all major holidays.

While not ready for April 1, the yard waste center will soon serve as a collection center for unused cathode ray tube electronics (CRTs), including televisions and computer monitors. The current drop-off site is the DPW facility on Bolivar Street.

“The [collection of] CRTs will eventually move from Bolivar Street,” said Trotta. “This will not happen for the reopening. The more likely timing will be the beginning of May. We have some logistical problems to work out.”

The only fee for residents remains a $10 yard waste fee, which must be renewed annually. Residents can purchase the sticker at the facility or at the DPW office, located in the lower level of Town Hall.

Residents are asked to bring a form of identification to show proof of residency. Commercial haulers are not allowed. Trotta said commercial businesses that collect yard waste can work out an arrangement with the yard waste contractor.

Selectmen approved the changes in February in an effort to centralize the collection of excess trash, to give residents a one-stop drop-off center, and to strengthen the monitoring and enforcement of illegal (non-resident) dumping.

Residents can still call Republic Services at 800-222-5158 to request curbside pickup of one bulk item per week. Residents are asked to call 72 hours in advance of their regular trash collection day.

In addition to bulk items, residents can bring excess bags of trash that do not fit in their regular container to the collection center. Trotta said this receptacle at the Pine Street facility is meant for occasions where a resident has a party or an event that results in excess trash. He said it is not meant to deposit unused items from garage sales.

In related news, the town’s Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held on May 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the DPW garage at 150 Bolivar Street.

Trotta said collection of undecorated Christmas trees and wreaths will continue to take place the first two weeks in January, but winter hours for the facility have yet to be worked out.
