CCT production of ‘Doubt’ continues this weekend
By Canton CitizenOne woman’s sense of right and wrong strongly tests her faith and calling, setting the spotlight for Canton Community Theatre’s upcoming production of Doubt: A Parable by John Patrick Shanley, which opens tomorrow night.
A parable is described as a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. So it should come as no surprise that the main character facing this conflict is both a nun and head of a grade school. Set in the Bronx in 1964, it is structured as a clash of wills and generations between the austere and traditional Sister Aloysius and the laidback young Father Flynn, who may be perceived as being a little too casual, too personal with the schoolboys in his charge.
Concerning the Sister is the priest’s unusual interest in the Catholic school’s first and only black student — so much so that it leads her to initiate a much-heated conference with Father Flynn and later to confront the student’s mother, who cannot fathom what is being said. What follows next is a direct outcome of when a clash of wills and ego test the boundaries of one’s belief in something bigger than themselves.
Under the direction of Renee Hanscom of Canton, the close-knit cast features Canton native and Braintree resident Kelly Lane, Mike Whalen of Weymouth, Jen Walsh of Milton, and Sonya Joyner of Dorchester.
Doubt: A Parable will have four performances: April 8, 9, 15 and 16, all starting at 8 p.m. Canton Community Theatre is located at the Village Shoppes at Cobb’s Corner, 95 Washington Street, next to the Shoe Dept and across from the Halfway Cafe. Make sure not to miss this unforgettable and thought-provoking production that will be sure to leave you pondering your own thoughts, beliefs, and values.
Tickets are $15 per person and will be available for purchase at the door or at cantoncommunitytheatre.org.
