Senior-laden baseball team has high hopes for 2016
By Mike BergerWith a great finish last season and 11 returning seniors on this year’s roster, CHS head baseball coach JP Scott is anxious to get started again. Weather permitting, the Bulldogs were due to open at King Philip on April 11, with their first home game scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, against Foxboro.
The team was also due to visit Oliver Ames this afternoon and will play a pair of games next week over April vacation: Tuesday at home against Fairhaven at 11 a.m. and Wednesday at North Attleboro at noon.
Last year the team enjoyed its best season in over a decade, finishing 11-11 overall and earning a playoff win over Greater New Bedford. This year’s squad is led by senior captains Griffin Jerrier and Joe Peccia. Scott said the immediate goal is to win at least 10 games and return to the state tournament.
“I expect big things out of our leaders,” he said. “[Jerrier] will be at the top of our pitching staff and [Peccia] will be our leadoff hitter and a huge spark to our offense as well as a huge player for us on defense, being able to play shortstop, second base — he will probably even catch early in the year.”
“Kevin Powers, who was a first-team all-league player last year, will be relied upon heavily as our ace on the mound and our number two or three hitter,” added Scott.
Rounding out the strong senior core are Mike McMahon, Sean Doyle, Jim Jenkins, Joe Bires, Jimmy Hamrock, Jason Powers, Steven Gorham, and Noah Sayed.
The roster also includes three juniors — Jackson Maffeo, Kevin Monagle and Danny Hartnett — as well as sophomores Matt Casamento and Austin Maffie.
