On Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Canton Historical Society will host an open exhibit of local historical artifacts in the Community Room of the Canton Public Library.

his societyThe Canton Historical Society is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve the history of Canton. The upcoming exhibit will show the town what the society “has done and continues to do to tell the story of the men and women who developed our wonderful town.”

Among the displays will be two beneficiaries of Community Preservation Act funding: a circa 1830 Friendship Quilt and Martha Howard’s 1786 quilted petticoat. Also on exhibit will be the oldest known American-made whole cloth quilt, made in 1786 by Martha Howard. Other rare artifacts will include a few James Bazin musical reed instruments (Bazin invented the first harmonica in America), an 1822 bass drum of the Crane Guard Militia, some early Canton and Stoughton documents, glass plates, and other items the society has saved and preserved.

To accomplish this mission of preservation, the society raises money through membership, fundraisers, grants, donations, and public programs. During Saturday’s exhibition, attendees will have an opportunity to talk with society members and learn about their interests in restoring and preserving the culture and traditions of Canton for future generations.
