Time for some answers from Canton selectmen
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
On April 7 the No Sharon Gas Pipeline committee held a public forum attended by 200 residents of Sharon, Canton, Stoughton and Walpole, where one of the Sharon selectmen took the stage to strongly voice his opposition to the Spectra Access Northeast pipeline project. The town of Sharon is poised to vote on a warrant opposing this new pipeline, which would run through their town, predominately in the Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary. On April 12, after holding their third meeting with Algonquin/Spectra representatives and allowing public comment, the Walpole Board of Selectmen passed two resolutions opposing the proposed new gas pipeline through their town forest, aquifer and wells.
It is reasonable and important for Canton residents to ask their Board of Selectmen to answer a few questions. Have you held any meetings, public or private, with Algonquin/Spectra representatives? Have you studied the construction plans that would take the new 30-inch pipeline through Cobb’s Corner? Have you listened to the more than 30 Canton property owners whose land would be taken to enlarge easements? Have you read the attorney general’s study concluding that Massachusetts doesn’t need additional gas pipelines now or in the future? Unless the Board of Selectmen can answer these questions, Canton citizens should not be satisfied with, “There’s nothing we can do.”
