Girls lax earns home-and-home split vs. Norwood
By Jay TurnerIt was a mixed bag of results for the Canton High girls lacrosse team last week as the lady Bulldogs earned a split in their home-and-home series against nonleague Norwood.
Canton dropped the first game in Norwood 10-6 on Tuesday but then bounced back with a decisive 11-4 win over the Mustangs at home two days later.
“We were just a little out of sorts in that first game, but we came into the second game ready for the challenge,” said head coach Chrissy O’Connor. “Right from the start our defense really stepped up and did an excellent job of keeping Norwood to the outside and not letting them in there for scoring opportunities. It was definitely a different game all around for Canton.”
Lauren Peplau, Devyn McGrann, Jess Powers, and Tessa Cudmore anchored the defensive effort, and goalkeeper Kathryn Doody made several big saves. The midfielders also played a great game defensively, led by senior captains Olivia Devoe, Mary Nee, and Lindsey Nolte.
Devoe and Nolte also spearheaded the offense, tallying three goals apiece. Fellow senior captain Casey Bradley continued her torrid start to the season with a five-point outing (2 goals, 3 assists), while Nee, Leah McClellan, and Rebecca Eckler chipped in with one goal apiece.
In the away game on Tuesday, Nolte led the way offensively with three goals, and Bradley, McClellan, and Molly Colburn added one score each. Caroline Hagan, Abby Colburn, and Nee all had assists for the Bulldogs in the losing effort.
“We started out pretty strong in the first half, but we just played a little bit flat,” said O’Connor. “Both teams were missing kids due to [school vacation], but I think overall we were evenly matched.”
With the win and the loss, the Bulldogs brought their record to 3-3 overall. The team was due to travel to Watertown on Monday, followed by home games Wednesday and Friday versus North Attleboro and Foxboro.
