Baseball hopes home cooking will aid playoff run
By Mike BergerThe quest for a third consecutive playoff appearance for the CHS baseball team was met with mixed results as the team went 2-3 over the past two weeks.
Now at the midway point of the season, the Bulldogs entered this week in third place in the Davenport Division at 4-6 overall, but they have a chance to make up some ground with six games straight games at home.
The team’s two most recent wins came April 29 against Sharon (7-4) and May 4 over Franklin (2-0).
In the Sharon game, the Bulldogs received solid innings from senior Joe Peccia and four strong innings from senior Noah Sayed, who was credited with the win. In the Franklin win, senior standout and team ace Kevin Powers had another dominant outing as he threw a complete-game shutout — his second of the campaign.
Canton has also had some tough losses as of late, including a 7-6 decision against Milford. The Bulldogs had clawed their way back to take the lead in the sixth inning but gave it back to the Hawks on a tough play in the bottom of the seventh. The squad also fell to division-leading Stoughton 13-2 and to Taunton 8-1.
The past two weeks did see some standout offensive performances, led by senior Mike McMahon, who as of last Friday had a six-game hitting streak going and a .411 batting average.
“Since he’s moved to the leadoff spot he’s really taken off,” head coach JP Scott said of McMahon.
Other offensive standouts over the last two weeks included senior Joe Bires, who went 6 for 14 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Powers, who was 6 for 16 with two RBIs, three runs scored, and a giant homerun against Sharon at Gibson Field.
With last week’s inclement weather out of the way, the Bulldogs were due to play four games in four days this week, starting with a road contest against Foxboro on Monday and then three straight at home: Tuesday versus Attleboro, Wednesday versus Oliver Ames, and today against Mansfield at 3:45 p.m. Next week, Canton will host Milford on Monday, May 16, and Stoughton on Wednesday, May 18.
