In Memory of Kaleigh
By Canton CitizenOvercast skies and intermittent showers didn’t discourage the hundreds of Luce families and teachers, as well as district administrators and community members who gathered for the unveiling of the Kaleigh Kenyon Buddy Bench last Friday. Kaleigh was a Luce kindergartner whose tragic death during a February snowstorm, along with that of beloved hockey coach Tom Gunning, rocked the town.
Designed so that a child sitting on the bench can let others know he or she is feeling lonely and needs a playmate, the Buddy Bench captures Kaleigh’s spirit and concern for others. During the dedication, Kaleigh’s kindergarten classmates sang her favorite song, “Over the Rainbow,” as Luce students in the upper grades accompanied them using sign language. The children also released pink balloons in memory of Kaleigh.
The Buddy Bench was donated by coworkers of Kaleigh’s aunt at Needham-based PTC and is located in the Luce’s upper playground. A similar bench, also donated by PTC, will be located at the Rodman Early Childhood Center, where Kaleigh went to preschool.
