Eyes on the prize
By Mike BergerUpdate: The CHS varsity baseball team is headed back to the postseason after defeating Cohasset 5-3 on the road on Friday. The victory was Canton’s third in a row, bringing the team’s record to 10-10 overall. Seeding for the upcoming south sectional tournament was expected to be released on Tuesday, May 31.
It’s a big week for the CHS baseball team as it now must win all of its remaining games to make it back to the playoffs. With a 7-10 record, the Bulldogs have to sweep their final three contests, all on the road: Monday at Sharon, Tuesday at Fairhaven, and Friday, May 27, at Cohasset at a time to be determined.
Senior Kevin Powers kept the team’s hopes alive with a dominating pitching performance in a 7-0 win over Cohasset last week at home on Senior Day. Powers threw a complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out six batters. Leading the Canton attack was senior Jim Jenkins, who had three hits, including a pair of singles and a double. Matt Casamento also had two hits with a stolen base and two runs scored.
In other action last week, the Bulldogs lost to Milford 14-6 and to Stoughton 8-5. The Milford game was frustrating as the team committed seven errors, leading to 10 unearned runs. To the Bulldogs’ credit, they overcame a 5-0 deficit and forged ahead 6-5, but Milford scored seven runs in the sixth, aided by three errors. Joe Peccia had three RBIs on the day with Daniel Hartnett knocking in a run.
