CHS girls lacrosse on cusp of postseason berth
By Jay TurnerUpdate: The Canton High girls lacrosse team defeated Attleboro 15-9 on Wednesday, punching their ticket to the MIAA tournament. The lady Bulldogs finish the regular season at 8-8 overall.
Wednesday was make-or-break time for the CHS girls lacrosse team as the lady Bulldogs traveled to Attleboro needing one more win to lock up a spot in the postseason tournament.
After splitting their two games last week — beating Milton 13-8 and falling to Sharon 16-13 — the girls entered the season finale just one victory shy of .500 at 7-8 overall. Attleboro, meanwhile, began the day at 6-10 but with an identical record against Hockomock League opponents at 3-6.
As for last week’s contests, head coach Chrissy O’Connor thought the girls had one of their better performances of the season against Milton before squandering a golden opportunity a few days later against Sharon.
In the Milton win, the Canton girls made the most of their scoring opportunities while also playing great defensively, led by emerging stars Tessa Cudmore and Devyn McGrann. Offensively, senior captain Lindsey Nolte had another big game with a team-high four goals, while senior captains Mary Nee and Casey Bradley and freshman Leah McLellan each finished with two.
Against Sharon on Wednesday, the Bulldogs managed to duplicate their scoring output but struggled on the other end as the Eagles went on to win by three. “We were always kind of chasing a goal,” said O’Connor afterwards. “We had our opportunities at the end, but we just couldn’t catch up.”
Junior Mary Kent was a bright spot in the loss, scoring four goals. McLellan, Nee and Nolte tallied two goals apiece, while Bradley, Molly Colburn, and Olivia Devoe each finished with one.
