Several track team members qualify for Div. 3 meet

With the dual and Hockomock League meets in the rearview mirror, many members of the CHS outdoor track team are now concentrating on the MIAA Division 3 Championships to be held Saturday in Burlington.

A number of team members have qualified for the meet, led by junior Selena Cho, who will compete in three events: the 200m, triple jump, and long jump. Four senior captains have also qualified for multiple events: Mark Clancy and Catherine Song in the mile and two-mile races; Woanyen Mahn in the 100m and 200m; and Tanya Bastien in the 100m and high jump.

Other D3 qualifiers include: (100m) Dan Alice, Mike Marino, Muhammad Sambo, and Nicole Brown; (400m) Hannah Link and Pat Hession; (800m) Sarah Collins; (2-mile) Jack Healey; (long jump) Sam Koplik and Prisca Joseph; (high jump) Hannah Jankowski; (110m hurdles) Matthew Floyd; and (400m hurdles) John Guenthner.

The 4×100, 4×400, and 4×800 relays for both the boys and girls teams have all qualified for the meet as well, and head coach Anna Amico said the participants in those races will be determined this week.

In the league championship meet held May 16 at Taunton High School, the girls team finished 10th and the boys team finished 12th.

On the girls’ side, Erika Lum had the highest finish, tying for second in the high jump with a distance of four feet, 10 inches. Other top-10 finishes were turned in by Song in the two-mile (3rd), Link in the 400m (3rd), Collins in the 800m (7th), and Koplik in the 400m hurdles (8th).

In addition, the 4×100 relay took fourth behind Joseph, Cho, Bastien, and Brown, while the 4×400 placed sixth behind Andrea McNeil, Leianna Brune, Collins, and Link.

The girls also had several top-20 finishes, including Brown (16th) and Bastien (16th) in the 100m; Brune (17th) in the 400m; McNeil (15th) in the 800m; Chloe Pennacchio (20th) in the two-mile; Koplik (16th) in the 100m hurdles; Belisle (16th) in the 400m hurdles: Jankowski (16th) and Bastien (16th) in the high jump; and Joseph (15th) and Koplik (16th) in the long jump.

For the boys team, Clancy had the highest finish with a sixth-place run in the two-mile, and Alice took eighth in the 100m dash. The relays also did well, with the 4×100 placing ninth (Marino, Mahn, Sambo, Alice) and the 4×400 finishing 10th (Hession, Kevin Messinger, Oren Vishny, Chris Milne).

Other top placements for the boys included Mahn (12th) and Sambo (19th) in the 200m; Hession (16th) in the 400m; Messinger (17th) in the 800m; Courtland Priest (19th) and Healey (20th) in the mile; Floyd (20) in the 110m hurdles; Guenthner (17th) and Floyd (19th) in the 400m hurdles; and Ian Ozer (14th) in the shot put.
