Softball team finishes strong with 3 big wins
By Mike BergerThe CHS varsity softball team never quit despite not winning a game prior to May 23, and the lady Bulldogs were finally rewarded as they picked up three wins over their final four games.
“I am so proud of these girls,” said head coach Tracy Andrews. “They overcame so many challenges to hang in there [and] never quit … I think that shows a lot of integrity and character. We finished with three very big wins and finished strong.”
The girls began the week with a 12-3 victory over Sharon on Senior Day in their last home game of the season.
Pitcher Sarah Reissfelder pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out seven batters. She also led the offensive attack with three hits, including a triple. The Bulldogs pounded out 19 hits in all, with Caitlyn McCarthy and Hannah Jerrier each finishing with three and Gab Matthews and Colleen Phalen adding two apiece.
Two days later, the girls traveled to nonleague Watertown, a Division 1 opponent, and swept both games of a doubleheader by a final score of 8-2. Reissfelder went the distance in game one, striking out five batters and limiting Watertown to five hits over five innings of work (shortened due to the slaughter rule). She also paced the offense as she hit two homeruns and finished with four RBIs. Rachel Dooley added two hits, including a triple, while Matthews had three hits and Julia Ezepik had two.
The second game also lasted five innings because of the slaughter rule. Sophomore Caitlyn Cahill started and pitched the first two innings with Reissfelder finishing the game.
The girls finished the season Friday with a 7-0 loss to playoff-bound Mansfield as the Hornets stung the lady Bulldogs with one big offensive inning.
