Correction: GMS schedule changes
By Canton CitizenThe Canton Citizen’s June 2 story on changes to the Galvin Middle School schedule and grade reporting practices contained inaccurate information. Both the headline and the article indicated that the School Committee had approved the changes at its May 26 meeting; however, no vote was taken on the matter.
Furthermore, the changes outlined by GMS Principal Dr. Bill Conard pertaining to grade reporting — including a switch to a trimester schedule — will not take effect in September as was indicated at the School Committee meeting. Instead, school officials have elected to table the matter for the foreseeable future, citing district policy on academic progress reporting.
The policy states that major changes in the reporting system must be preceded by a “cooperative study and evaluation by teachers, principals, parents, and the assistant superintendent, who will submit the proposal to the School Committee for consideration and approval.”
In the case of the proposed GMS changes, a study was undertaken by a volunteer committee consisting of teachers and administrators; however, no parent input was considered, nor were the changes presented to the School Committee for a formal vote.
Other changes outlined at the May 26 meeting, such as modifications to the lunch and homeroom schedules and the addition of “flex” periods, will move forward in the fall as planned.
