On Thursday, May 26, thanks to the generous funding of the Canton Alliance for Public Education, the eighth grade students at the Galvin Middle School, along with the Canton Honor Guard; the fifth grade students and teachers from the Hansen, JFK, and Luce schools; family, friends, and the Canton community celebrated Memorial Day with speeches, plays, poetry, and music. Robert DeYeso, along with the Canton Honor Guard, conducted a roll call to remember those individuals from Canton who gave their lives in service to their country.

Ten eighth grade students performed vignettes explaining the causes of the American Revolution to the fifth graders. To honor those first Americans who fought, served, and sacrificed their lives so that we might be free, all eighth graders participated in a reenactment of the battles of Lexington and Concord.

To honor those Americans who fought and sacrificed their lives in the Civil War, World War I, Korea, Vietnam, World War II, Desert Storm, Iraq War, and the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, 25 eighth grade students recited and read excerpts from some of history’s most famous speeches.

The day culminated with the playing of Taps to honor those who died in service to our country. The weather was beautiful, but the ceremony, the citizenship, and the coming together of young and old was extraordinary. The students and staff at the Galvin Middle School promise never to forget the sacrifices that those who came before us, and those who currently serve around the world, have made to keep us safe and free.
