Canton Comm. Theatre blooms in Little Shop of Horrors

By

The Canton Community Theatre presents Little Shop of Horrors, a horror comedy rock musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. The musical, which opens tomorrow night, is based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors and features several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown),” “Somewhere That’s Green,” and “Suddenly, Seymour.”

The story features Seymour Krelborn, a nerdy and meek orphan working at Mushnik’s, a flower shop in the urban, seedy area Skid Row. Seymour harbors a crush on fellow co-worker Audrey Fulquard, but his confidence requires some nurturing to pursue it any further as he is extremely shy and constantly berated into submission by shop owner Mr. Mushnik. One day as Seymour is seeking to discover a new plant species, he finds a very mysterious unidentified plant, which he calls Audrey II. Possessed with carnivorous cravings for human blood, the plant soon begins to sing for its supper and is ‘nourished’ accordingly. The plant grows and grows with its insatiable appetite in the same cadence as Seymour’s budding infatuation for Audrey. Will Audrey II take over the world or will Seymour and Audrey defeat it? The potting soil thickens!

While the production features several residents of Canton and other communities, one of the more memorable and organic ‘cast members’ is Audrey II, the animated plant and foe of Seymour that will undergo radical transformation right in front of the audience to experience and enjoy. Along with Audrey II, some of the other cast members include (in alphabetical order) Jarryd Michael Blanchard, Alyson Churchill, Sarah Flanigan, Amanda Flicop, Kevin Fortin, Dasol Lee, Kirsten Mauriello, Edmund O’Donoghue, David Palmer, Geoff Tegnell, Jenn Tegnell, Caroline Tobin, and Stephanie Wallace.

Be sure to make this family friendly production part of your Canton summer experience. Little Shop of Horrors will have five performances: July 29 and 31 and August 5-7, all starting at 8 p.m. at the CCT space at the Village Shoppes, 95 Washington Street (next to the Shoe Dept, across from the Halfway Cafe). Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at the door or at cantoncommunitytheatre.org. For more info, email cantoncommunitytheatre@gmail.com.
