Online Speeding Survey: Key Findings
By Jay TurnerThe following are key findings from the Canton Citizen’s online speeding survey, conducted last week with the assistance of the Everything Canton Facebook group. The survey was open Monday through Friday and generated 111 responses.
* A majority of respondents (58 percent) believe that speeding is a serious problem in Canton, and an even greater percentage (64 percent) believe that speeding in Canton has worsened over time.
* Nearly one-third of respondents (32 percent) are mostly unsatisfied with speed enforcement in Canton, while 50 percent reported being somewhat satisfied.
* The most common suggestion for how to reduce speeding in Canton was to increase police enforcement/add more speed traps (41 percent).
* The overwhelming majority of respondents (78 percent) believe that speeding is wrong; however, 47 percent believe it is still a minor infraction and should be treated as such.
* Despite the belief that speeding is a serious problem, nearly 80 percent of respondents said they usually (67 percent) or always (11 percent) obey the speed limit. Additionally, only 6 percent said they drove more than 10 mph above the speed limit on average.
* Of the major roads in Canton, speeding is most common on Pleasant Street and Dedham Street. Both also finished Nos. 1 and 2 on the list of the worst speeding “trouble spots” in Canton. Rounding out the top five were Washington Street, York Street, and Bolivar Street.
* Several residents also identified “neighborhoods” or “side roads” as trouble spots, most notably the Cedarcrest and Wentworth neighborhoods. Sherman Street was also a popular write-in choice.
Other key observations:
* Many residents who opposed the roundabout disputed the town’s claim that there was a speeding problem on Pleasant Street; however, speeding is clearly a top concern there. On the other hand, some survey respondents actually blamed the roundabout for the increased speeds.
* Speeding on Washington Street, according to respondents, is most common on the outskirts, either heading toward Ponkapoag or toward Cobb Corner.
* Of the main roads, Randolph and Chapman streets were lower on the list of speeding concerns.
* Lawrence, Bailey, Pecunit, and Greenlodge streets also received multiple votes as speeding trouble spots.
