Man About Canton: Proposed Gas Pipeline

By

Did you know …

Spectra Energy’s proposed gas pipeline project calls for 22 miles of new pipeline in eastern Massachusetts with the last five miles ending in Canton. The “Access Northeast Project” is slated to travel through Canton parallel to an existing 24-inch Algonquin gas transmission line. The new pipeline will be a 30-inch pipe. Proponents say that new pipelines will lead to lower electricity prices and increased electric reliability in the region. Opponents are concerned about a proposed tariff that would have Massachusetts ratepayers funding the pipeline construction costs. There are also concerns about pipeline leaks as well as the process used to extract the gas, hydraulic fracturing, or fracking of shale rock.

The landmark Vin & Eddie’s family-owned restaurant on Route 18 in Abington recently closed after 61 years in business. For many years in the 1970s and 1980s, Canton politicians, developers, and businesspeople would meet on Friday afternoons to discuss the current state of affairs in the town. MAC was one of the young politicians at the time who would travel from Canton to Abington to listen to the older Cantonites talk about how to run the town of Canton.

“Phantom Gourmet” host Dave Andelman gave Amelia’s Italian restaurant on Route 138 in Stoughton a big thumbs up on an episode recently aired on his TV show. Andelman said, “This is an Italian restaurant that definitely makes its presence felt south of Boston.”

If you have some spare time, take a ride through the Canton Corner Cemetery and read some of the gravestones to see which names you recognize. Among many, you will see some members of Paul Revere’s family. You will see the graves of General Richard Gridley, the founder of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Dr. James Batcheller Sumner, the noted Cornell University professor and biochemist. He was the son of the prominent Sumner family who was born and raised on Chapman Street in Canton and really distinguished himself by winning the 1946 Nobel Prize for chemistry.

The Sons of the Canton American Legion recently placed American flags on Canton highway overpasses in honor of our military, veterans, and our country. Thanks go out to Henry Krueger, Henry Krueger, Jr., Mike Trunfio, Jean Marie Conley-Coelho, Jane Donnelly, and Billy Murray.

For those of you who would like a summer “Plymouth Getaway Tour,” the Canton Council on Aging is sponsoring one on Tuesday, August 23. The bus will depart from the senior center at 9 a.m. and travel to Plymouth for a sightseeing tour, lunch at the Hearth & Kettle in Plymouth, and then a narrated 75-minute harbor cruise on the Plymouth Belle. The cost is only $79 per person. For more information, call the senior center at 781-828-1323.

According to the National Fire Protection Association Fire Code, which has been adopted by the state of Massachusetts, outdoor recreational fires are now allowed on private property as long as they are limited to approved fire pits and not within 25 feet of a structure. Fires must be attended to at all times and a garden hose connected to a water supply must be ready to use. These fires are not to be used for the burning of rubbish or trash.

Philadelphia recently became the first major American city with a soda tax. The city council approved a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on sugary and diet beverages. The estimated $90 million in new tax revenue will go toward paying for prekindergarten, community schools, and recreation centers. The American Beverage Association called the soda tax “discriminatory and highly unpopular,” and they plan to fight the tax in court. The case for a healthier Philadelphia could be made as more than 68 percent of adults and 41 percent of children are classified as overweight or obese.

From MAC’s trivia file: On August 5, 1957, the teenage dance show “American Bandstand” hosted by Dick Clark made its network debut on ABC television. Also on August 5 in 1962, actress Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her Los Angeles home. Her death was ruled as probable suicide.

It’s not what you say out of your mouth that determines your life; it’s what you whisper to yourself that has the most power.

That is all for now folks. See you next week.
