As of Monday morning, the CHS golf team was still undefeated at 7-0 and had already clinched a spot in the MIAA state tournament, marking the seventh consecutive year that the team has qualified for the postseason.

Last week, the Bulldogs edged North Attleboro by one point, 194-195, and extended their winning streak with victories over Stoughton (159-181) and Sharon (172-178).

In last Tuesday’s home match against NA, a tiebreaker was needed after both teams’ top four golfers combined to shoot a 153.

Sophomore Tommy Dimock had the low score for Canton with a 37, followed by Matt Minichiello (38), Danny Powers (38), and Jackson Maffeo (40).

The tiebreaker was a 41 shot by both Joey Vaughan and Niko Donovan. “This was Niko’s first varsity match so it was great to see his hard work pay off,” noted head coach Mike Barucci. “Each match we are getting contributions from different guys, and we will need that to continue as we move forward and play stronger teams.”

“This was a big win for us and a key win in the division,” Barucci added. “NA was also undefeated in the division so it was important for us to win this one at home.”

A day later at Easton Country Club, the Bulldogs continued their winning ways against Stoughton, led by Minichiello with a team-best 37. Jack Goyetch shot a 40 while Maffeo, Vaughan, and Bubba McNeice all shot 41’s.

Later in the week, Canton traveled to Spring Valley Country Club and earned a hard-fought win over Sharon.

Barucci said this was the first time that the Bulldogs had played at Spring Valley and they struggled with the speed of the greens. McNeice led the way as he chipped in for birdie on the ninth hole to shoot a 42 and earn match medalist by one stroke. Minichiello and Goyetch both shot a 43, and Vaughan came in with a 44.

In other team news, Minichiello was selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week for September 11-17. The senior has had an impressive start to the season and was the match medalist for several contests.

This week, Canton was due to play two away matches against Milford and North Attleboro, two of the top teams in the Davenport Division. The team then travels to Foxboro on October 4, followed by another match against Milford at home on October 5.
