Cross country runners earn sweep of rival Stoughton
By Mike BergerThe CHS boys and girls cross country teams both enjoyed home wins over Stoughton on Senior Day and are now preparing for the Hockomock League Championship meet, scheduled for Saturday, October 29, at the Wrentham Developmental Center.
Last week’s victory for the boys team was its first of the season and it was a close one, with the Bulldogs prevailing by one point over the Black Knights 29-30. It was their second straight meet decided by a single point, following their 28-27 loss to Foxboro at Gilbert State Forest on October 5.
Leading the way for Canton in last Tuesday’s win was Colin Messinger, who placed third overall with a time of 18:54. Messinger was followed by six more Bulldog runners in the fifth through 10th spots: Andrew Salvatori (19:40), Brendan Matulis (19:41), Thomas Cahill (19:42), Alex Maddestra (19:46), Paul Seignarbieux (19:48), and Jack Healey (20:08).
Meanwhile, the lady Bulldogs also had a strong showing against Stoughton, earning their second win of the campaign by a score of 15-48.
Canton swept the first five spots behind James Polsgrove (22:46), Chloe Pennacchio (23:39), Ally Chin (24:46), Emily Orkin (25:07), and Maggie Dunn (25:21). Also placing in the top 10 were Olivia Stevens and Jackie Benson, who placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
Two days later, Canton traveled to Medfield for a nonleague meet and both teams came up short, with the boys losing 15-44 and the girls falling 26-35.
The girls were again led by Polsgrove, who won the race in 21:07. Pennacchio was next for Canton in fourth, followed by Chin in fifth, Dunn in 11th, and Orkin in 14th.
On the boys’ side, Messinger was again tops for Canton with a sixth-place finish (17:53), followed by Maddestra in eighth, Salvatori in ninth, Matt Floyd in 10th, and Matulis in 11th.
