Canton teen brings winning talents to Carnegie Hall
By Canton CitizenCongratulations are in order for 14-year-old Kayla Lee of Canton, who placed second in the 11- to 14-year-old category at the 2016 American Fine Arts Festival’s “Golden Era of Romantic Music” International Competition. Lee, a 10th grader at the Winsor School in Boston, received the prestigious honor for her performance of Les Cloches de Geneve: Nocturne by Franz Liszt.
Lee and Benjamin Kim, 16, of Dover, also won first place in the Ensemble category for their performance of their two duets, Russian Song, Op. 11 and Italian Polka, both by S. Rachmaninoff.
Winning the two competitions qualifies Lee for a $500 scholarship to attend AFAF summer music courses in Europe and an opportunity to participate in a special concert at the Robert Schumann Museum in Zwickau, Germany.
Lee and Kim performed at the Winners’ Recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City on November 6. For Lee, it was her second time performing at Carnegie Hall. In 2014, she placed first in the Advanced Level A category in the 11th annual Russian Music Competition. She has been receiving piano lessons for 11 years from Margarita Gurevich in Stoughton.
A gifted performer and singer, Lee played the title character in the Hansen Elementary School’s fifth grade production of Mulan and later starred as Sharpay Evans in the Galvin Middle School production of High School Musical. Last spring, she performed in the Winsor School and Roxbury Latin’s production of Secret Garden and she’s currently in Winsor’s small chorus.
