News Notes: Police, firefighters rescue accident victims

By

Several Canton police officers and firefighters worked to extricate three accident victims from a wet swampy area near Brad’s Glass at 872 Turnpike Street (Route 138) on Saturday, November 19, around 8:15 p.m. All three victims were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. According to Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty, the accident occurred when the operator swerved to avoid hitting a deer. The vehicle hit a guardrail and flipped over. Police were first on the scene and worked to free the accident victims.

In other recent public safety calls, firefighters and Eversource worked to restore power following a small utility pole fire on Dan Road on November 14. Firefighters also extinguished a car fire at the Village Shoppes Mall on November 19 around 11:45 a.m. No one was hurt in the incident.

CAASA sponsors Sticker Shock campaign

The Canton Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CAASA) has launched a “Sticker Shock” campaign, an annual youth-led initiative to change adult attitudes toward selling and providing alcohol to minors. The initiative began November 17 and runs through December 19.

Canton High School students, coordinated by Heather Sullivan and School Resource Officer Ted Lehan, are leading the effort. Partnering with local retailers, the students placed stickers on cases of beer and brown bags that come with a strong reminder: “By refusing to buy, deliver, or provide alcohol for someone under 21, you are contributing to a safe and responsible community.”

“Adults need to set a better example for kids,” said one youth member. “When adults supply alcohol to youth, it sends a very mixed message. Underage drinking is not a teen problem, but a community problem. Adults, youth, law enforcement, and retail stores all need to be part of the solution.”

“A strong community message is sent when alcohol retailers like Paula’s Package Store, Crowell’s Market, Tri-Town Discount Liquors, and Canton Village Wine & Spirits takes responsibility for speaking out against underage drinking,” said CAASA Chairman Nick Pirelli. “We truly appreciate their partnership in this campaign.”

Alcohol has been identified as the number-one drug of choice among Canton and Massachusetts youth, and it is also one of the easiest substances to obtain. The Sticker Shock campaign hopes to cause adults to think twice before making it any easier for youth to access alcohol. For more information, visit CantonAlliance.org.

In other substance abuse news, Canton Fire Department EMS Coordinator Jamie Meier reported no drug overdoses during the two-week period between November 14 and 27.
